Check above the scales/arpeggios you want to practice. Slurred 3-octave major and minor (melodic and harmonic) scales must be played with 3 octaves to a bow; slurred 2-octave major and minor scales must be played with 2 octaves to a bow. Slurred chromatic scales must be played with 12 notes to a bow. Slurred 3-octave arpeggios must be played with 3 or 9 notes to a bow; slurred 2-octave arpeggios must be played with 6 notes to a bow. Slurred dominant seventh and diminished seventh scales must be played with 4 or 12 notes to a bow. For double-stop scales, refer to the official ABRSM syllabus, which can be downloaded as a PDF document from the ABRSM website.

Why this trainer? In 2007 I was preparing the ABRSM Grade 8 violin exam, which I took on June 20th, 2007. I realized that I was often practicing scales and arpeggios in the same order, and that I needed a practice routine that could be more similar to what I'd be asked at my exam, that is, a few scales and arpeggios in a random order (or almost). I wrote this php code (first version was in Javascript) that randomly draws a certain scale or arpeggio among the ones requested for the Grade 8 violin exam. I hope this small piece of code can be useful to whom may need to routinely practice scales and arpeggios in a random order.
