About my work

I am a research physicist and love my work. Since 1989 I have worked with ENEA in the Laboratories of Casaccia, at the Northern periphery of Rome (Italy), very close to the Lake Bracciano.

My research activity is mainly theoretical and principally deals with the interaction of electromagnetic radiation (the "light") with matter, that is, the optical properties of materials. These properties can be exploited to design optical devices with suitable behaviours. Examples of such devices are thin-film optical filters, optical waveguides, optical fibres, lasers, optical microcavities, and so on. So far, I have authored and co-authored about 180 papers consisting of articles in international scientific journals and conference contributions.

As a side activity, I have also been working on the theory of commutative hypercomplex numbers and their application to the basic equations of physics. In principle, hypercomplex numbers can help in solving problems of quantum physics, electromagnetism, general relativity, and more. My research in this field led me to co-author the book The Mathematics of Minkowski Space-Time with an Introduction to Commutative Hypercomplex Numbers. My contribution to that book regards especially the matrix formalization of systems of commutative hypercomplex numbers, which I and co-authors first introduced in this article, published in 2005 in the journal Advances in Applied Clifford Algebras.

  • Notes (in Italian) about Mie's theory. Initially, I wrote them for personal use. Later, they have been adopted by University of Genoa (Dept. of Physics) as lecture notes for the lessons in Nanostructures held by Prof. Boragno.
